Fujitsu Mini-Split Code 98
Hard lockoutShown as: OPERATION lamp blinks 9 times, TIMER lamp blinks 8 times, ECONOMY lamp blinking continuously
Outdoor unit fan motor 2 error, on twin-fan condensers. The second outdoor fan turned slower than 100 RPM within 20 seconds of starting; repeated five times in a row, the compressor and fan stop permanently.
Manual wording: “Outdoor Unit Fan Motor 2 Error - When the outdoor fan rotation speed is less than 100 RPMs in 20 seconds after the fan motor starts, the fan will stop... If above repeats 5 times in a row, compressor and fan stop permanently.”
Documented for: Twin-fan outdoor units: larger RGLX, RLXB and RLXFZ condensers
Likely causes, most common first
- Second outdoor fan blade obstructed, iced, or the motor is locked
- Excessive ambient temperature around the fan motor
- Fan motor windings out of specification, or missing DC voltage to the motor
- Failed outdoor main PCB
What you can safely check yourself
- With the power off at the disconnect, look for debris or ice jamming either outdoor fan blade
- Turn the power off at the disconnect for about 5 minutes, then restore power
When to call a technician
After the permanent stop this needs a technician to test the motor and reset the system.
A Fujitsu mini-split throwing this code repeatedly has a reason — clearing the code without fixing the cause just hides it.
