Furnace in lockout: what it means and the one safe way to reset it

A lockout is the furnace deliberately refusing to run because something failed repeatedly — usually ignition or a safety switch. It is a protective state, not a malfunction of its own.

Soft lockout vs. hard lockout

• Soft lockout:the board waits (commonly 1–3 hours) and then retries by itself. Most ignition-failure codes work this way.
• Hard lockout:the board will not retry until power is cycled or, on some brands, until a rollout switch is manually reset — by a technician who has found out why it tripped.

The one safe reset

1. Turn the furnace off at its service switch (looks like a light switch on or near the cabinet) or at the breaker.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Turn it back on and let it run a full cycle.

Do this once. If the furnace locks out again, the fault is real. Write down the flash code first — the reset clears it, and the code is exactly what your technician wants to know. Look it up on the brand pages before you reset.

Why repeated resetting is dangerous

Every retry on an ignition fault dumps a little unburned gas into the heat exchanger. Resetting over and over to squeeze heat out of a furnace that keeps locking out means repeatedly re-attempting the thing the furnace decided was unsafe. Rollout and limit trips are heat where it should not be; pressure-switch faults can mean a blocked flue. These are the exact failures that lead to fires and carbon-monoxide events when bypassed.

If a working furnace is worth the service call to you on the coldest week of the year, a locked-out one absolutely is.
